18-Year Old Sayyidina ‘Othman Secondary School Student Wins Apple Ipad 2 in AITI’s Essay Writing Competition

The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) today announced the winners of the Essay Writing Competition held in conjunction with the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) at the Seri Kerna Hall, AITI Office in Kg Anggerek.
 
Present in the ceremony is AITI’s Chief Executive, Awg Haji Yahkup bin Haji Menudin as the Guest of Honour as well as more than 80 students who took part in the competition with their respective teachers and parents or guardians. 
AITI opened the competition on the 18th April 2011 and closed it on 30th May 2011 with two (2) different categories – Primary Level Category for age from 9 to 11 years old and the Secondary Level Category for age from 12 to 18 years old. Participants of the primary level category must submit a drawing and composition (not less than 100 words) to the topic “How would the future look like in the rural community with ICT?”. Participants of the secondary level, on the other hand, must submit an essay (not less than 500 words) to the essay topic “Will ICT help the rural communities or is it an unnecessary burden?”. The essay topics reflected the WTISD theme this year – “Better Life in Rural Communities with ICTs”. WTISD is celebrated every year on May 17th by Members of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) around the world.
 
More than 80 entries were received for both categories from the public and private schools alike. Six (6) Senior Officers from various agencies including the Ministry of Education, Centre for British Teachers (CfBT) and the Language and Literature Bureau were selected as the judges for the competition.
 
The first place winner for the Secondary Level Category is Khong Yu Neng from the Sayyidina ‘Othman Secondary School, Bukit Beruang, Tutong who wins a white Apple iPad 2 worth BND800. The second place winner and the third place winner of the same category are students from Maktab Duli PMAMB Gadong- Adeline Liew Wei Ying winning a Panasonic Lumix Digital Camera worth BND600 and Leong Chi Wei who received an Apple iPod Touch worth BND350 respectively.

For the Primary Level Category, the first place winner who wins an Apple iPod Touch worth BND350 is 10-year old Mohammad Rosyiq Daniel bin Haji Roslani from Tungku Primary School, second place winner of an Apple iPod Nano worth BND300 is Awg Arif Akmal bin Jaya from Kg Katok ‘A’ Primary School and meanwhile Nur Akmalaqilah binti Mahathir from Saba Darat Primary School grabbed the Sony Digital Camera worth BND250 as the third place winner.
 
The certificate and prize presentation ceremony concluded with a group photograph of the winners and the Guest of Honour and the recital of Doa Selamat.
