AITI and IFB Sign MoU for ICT Development Program for Rural Areas

The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) and InfoCom Federation of Brunei (IFB) held a signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Project Agreement on their collaboration to implement the ICT Rural Outreach Program (iROP) project. This is the first MoU between AITI and IFB where both parties will collaborate on the implementation of mutually beneficial projects involving the use of locally made and developed ICT products to narrow the digital divide, improve ICT literacy and develop IT entrepreneurs into self sustainable businesses which serve the rural community.
 
The objective of the project is to build ICT literacy in the rural areas in response to the national call for human resource capacity development. The program itself will emphasize on the use of ICT to improve ICT literacy in rural areas and develop IT entrepreneurs into self sustainable businesses which serve the rural community. Thus, this will narrow the ICT digital divide that exist in the rural areas.
 
Dewan Belalong in Bangar, Temburong District has been nominated to be the centre for the pilot site to start off the iROP program. The site was nominated based on the recommendation of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA).
 
The first phase will include the setting up of a one stop community centre which will be equipped with adequate ICT facilities such as a training cum resource room which provides access to e-Speed Broadband Internet connectivity. Initial training sessions will be conducted to equip participants with a strong ICT foundation. Phase 2 of the program will focus more on comprehensive entrepreneurship training and marketing (technical skill) program for the development entrepreneur to spur the e-commerce activities and to promote the local communities products regionally and globally.
 
Through this MOU, four members of IFB will be working closely with AITI to deliver the phase 1 of the iROP program. The training courses will be conducted by InfoMars and TechOne Global Sdn Bhd. The ICT facilities will be provided by ZimacSilicon Technolgies and the e-Speed Broadband Internet annual subscription will be sponsored by TelBru (B) Sdn. Bhd.
 
The ceremony was officiated with the signing of the MOU between Awg Hj Yahkup bin Hj Menudin, Chief Executive of AITI, and Pg Abd Ghani bin Pg Hj Metusin, the Chairman of IFB, and was witnessed by The Gues t of Honour, Dato Paduka Awang Buntar bin Osman, Member of Authority of AITI. The ceremony was held in Seri Kerna Hall, AITI office in Anggerek Desa.
 
Upon the successful implementation of the iROP pilot program, the project will be handed over to MOHA. MOHA will further develop the implementation of the project to all other proposed mukims/kampong in the four districts of Brunei Darussalam aligned with MOHA's e-Mukims initiatives. AITI hopes that the success of iROP in the long run willboost the Brunei's economy through the development and growth of ICT industry in the country.
