The yearly Asia Pacific ICT Award (APICTA) event will be hosted this year in Hong Kong, China starting from 24th until 27th November 2013. The APICTA is an international awards program which aims to increase ICT awareness in the community and assist in closing the digital divide. By providing networking and product benchmarking opportunities to ICT innovators and entrepreneurs in the region, the program is designed to stimulate ICT innovation and creativity, promote economic and trade relations, facilitate technology transfer, and offer business matching opportunities through exposure to venture capitalists and investors.
Participants of the awards program comprise members of the APICTA Alliance. They are guided by Framework of Cooperation identifying how member-economies can work together in support of the Awards Program as well as other programs that foster development and growth of the ICT industry in the region. APICTA’s 17 member-economies include Australia, Brunei, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.
Hj Yahkup bin Haji Menudin, Chief Executive of Authority for Info-Communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam, who is also the Chairman of the working committee of Brunei ICT Award (BICTA), leads this year Brunei’s 10 teams to compete in APICTA 2013 event. These 10 teams comprise of “MIB” by: Ivy Wong and Niqmatul Hidayah Bte Erwyan from Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB, “Higher Education Guidance System” by: Aida Amalin Binti Muhammaad Aimanuddin and Woo Wai Munn from Chung Hua Middle School, KB, “AutiSay” by: Dk Siti Norbazilah Binti Pg Zulkipli, Halina Binti Jumaat and Abdullah Bin Maidin, “Brunei History Adventure Game” by: Ikmalina Hakimah Binti Haji Md Yunos, Mohammad Farhan Hj Awg Ismail and Muhammad Nur Huda Firdaus Jamil, “Wadihah Haji & Umrah Application” by: Haji Muhammad Saufi Bin Haji Jumahat and Norizyan Awg Hussin, “MiSC (Media & In-Service Centre) by: Pg Mohd Suffian Pg Mohd Said from a special unit of Ministry of Education, “iRop” by: Tay Eue Kam from ZimacSilicon Technologies Sdn Bhd, “Malppy & Friends” by: Simon Soo from Giftbox Enterprise Sdn Bhd, “Mindplus Islamic Knowledge” by: Ak Mohd Khairi Bin Pg Hj Metussin from PHMD Publishing Company and lastly “FoodFuel” by: Haji Muhammad Saufi Bin Haji Jumahat and Md Khairul Anwar Bin Sabir from DotRoot Technologies.
This is part of a continuous effort and initiative by the Ministry of Communications to develop country ICT industry by encouraging the ICT developers to compete at the international level. Each winner of APICTA award from Brunei’s teams will be given a grant of $50,000 by AITI to further develop and enhance their product into a marketable commercial product. The 2nd prize or Merit Award winner will be given a grant of $25,000. Hopefully these grants would provide an excellent incentive for the participating teams to strive their best to compete. Last year when in APICTA 2012, Brunei Darussalam bagged 5 awards. Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB students won the Winner Award in Secondary Student Project. Four companies in Brunei also won Merit Awards and they are John Harith Technology Sdn Bhd in the e-Logistic and Supply Chain Category, ZimacSilicon Technologies Sdn Bhd in the e-Government Category, Mediahikmah in the e-Learning Category and MeSixty in the Tourism and Hospitality.
Brunei’s executive member representatives at APICTA committee are Hj Yahkup bin Hj Menudin, Chief Executive of AITI and Pg Abd Ghani bin Pg Metussin, the Chairman of IFB who will be attending the APICTA 2013 event and annual APICTA General meeting too.
Brunei also sends 5 representatives as APICTA 2013 Judges who will be judging the competition in different categories. These judges are Hj Osman bin Hj Ladis and Wallace Koh Hoe Aik from AITI, Pg Sarimah bte Pg Abd Latiff from IFB, Hj Abdull Rahim Derus from Ministry of Education and Jennifer Voon from Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB).
