APICTA 2011 Before Departure

The yearly Asia Pacific ICT Award (APICTA) event will be hosted this year in Pattaya, Thailand  starting from 8th till 11th November 2011. The APICTA is an international awards program which aims to increase ICT awareness in the community and assist in closing the digital divide. By providing networking and product benchmarking opportunities to ICT innovators and entrepreneurs in the region, the program is designed to stimulate ICT innovation and creativity, promote economic and trade relations, facilitate technology transfer, and offer business matching opportunities through exposure to venture capitalists and investors.
 
Participants of the awards program comprise members of the APICTA Alliance. They are guided by Framework of Cooperation identifying how member-economies can work together in support of the Awards Program as well as other programs that foster development and growth of the ICT industry in the region. APICTA’s 16 member-economies include Australia, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.
 
Dato Paduka Hj Awg Alaihuddin bin POKDGSL Dato Seri Utama Hj Awg Mohamad Taha, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communication, who is also the Chairman of the steering committee of Brunei ICT Award (BICTA), leads this year Brunei’s 6 teams to compete in APICTA 2011 event.  These 6 teams comprise of the BICTA 2011 winners namely “Wa7 Facilities Reservation” by Jong Chea Soon and Derby Teo from Chung Hwa Middle School, “Brunei Experience Multimedia Project” by: Abdul Rahsid Haji Osman, Dk Siti Syuhaidah Pg Haji Bahruddin, Fatin Liyana bte Suhili, Mohd Rafiee Hj Rahim from Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical
 
College, “Simple Pay” by: Nor Azarinabte Hj Mohsin, Ya-Anenawati bte Hj Md Yusuf, Farrah Koh Yen Swan from Brunei Institute of Technology, “Social Deal Brunei” by: HiroTien from Social Buzz Advertising, “Islamic Brunei Eductors” by: Hajah Salma Bee Haji Abdul Latiff from Crescent Sdn Bhd and lastly “Brunei Lifestyle Mobile Application” by: King She Horng from Iplussoft Technology. This is part of a continuous effort and initiative by the Ministry of Communication to develop country ICT industry by encouraging the ICT developers to compete at the international level.
 
Each winner of APICTA award from Brunei’s teams will be given a grant of $50,000 by AITI to further develop and enhance their product into a marketable commercial product. The 2nd prize or Merit Award winner will be given a grant of $25,000. Hopefully these grants would provide an excellent incentive for the participating teams to strive their best to compete. Last year, Chung Hwa Middle School students won the Merit Award in Secondary School Category in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and in the previous year Mars Enterprise represented by Mr FooBoon Seng and Ms Cleo Garcia won the Merit award as the top scorer in the e-logistics and Supply Chain Category in Melbourne, Australia. Both of these Merit Award winners were also given a grant of  $25,000  each by AITI to further enhancing their products.
 
Brunei’s executive member representatives at APICTA committee are Hj Yahkup bin Hj Menudin, Chief Executive of AITI and Pg Abd Ghani bin Pg Metussin, the Chairman of IFB who will be attending the APICTA 2011 event and annual APICTA General meeting too.
 
Brunei also sends 5 representatives as APICTA Judges who will be judging the competition in different categories. These judges are Hj Osman bin Hj Ladis and Wallace Koh Hoe Aik from AITI, Pg Sarimah bte Pg Abd Latiff from IFB, Dr Fadzliwati bte Mohiddin from UNISSA and Dr Sophiana Chua Abdullah from CSPS.
 
The organizing committee of APICTA at the Gala dinner in Pattaya,Thailand will be passing the baton to Brunei Darussalam to host the next year’s APICTA event. An advanced party comprising of staffs from AITI, IFB, MOC, MOE, iCenter and Telbru left earlier on Friday, 4th November, 2011 to study the organizing and logistics requirement in order to better prepare for hosting such an important and prestigious event in 2012. The advanced party was led by Mr Queh Ser Pheng, Deputy Chief Executive of AITI.
