ASEAN ICT Masterplan 2015 Roadshow

The Ministry of Communications, Brunei Darussalam and Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) have jointly organised an ASEAN ICT Masterplan 2015 Roadshow.
 
Present as the Guest of Honour at the event  was the Yang Berhormat, Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Communications.  Also present were Dato Paduka Hj Alaihuddin bin POKDG Haji Mohd Taha, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communications and also Chairman of AITI.  The event was also attended by representatives from Government agencies, academic institutions and local ICT companies.
 
The ASEAN ICT Masterplan (AIM) 2015 was launched during the 10th ASEAN Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministers’ (TELMIN) meeting held at Kuala Lumpur, in January this year. AIM 2015 with its vision Towards an Empowerment and Transformational ICT: Creating an Inclusive, Vibrant and Integrated ASEAN is a result of 10 years ICT cooperation with ASEAN. AIM 2015 is a blueprint charting ASEAN ICT five-year development. It is designed to promote the public and private sectors in taking up interests in the ICT industry. AIM2015 is based on 6 strategic thrusts namely i) Economic Transformation, ii) People Empowerment and Engagement, iii) Innovation, iv) Infrastructure Development, v) Human Capital Development and vi) Bridging the Digital Divide. With these 6 strategic thrusts – three pillars supported by three foundations, AIM 2015 is designed to deliver the following four key outcomes;
 
ICT as an engine of growth for ASEAN countries
• Recognition for ASEAN as a global ICT hub
• Enhanced quality of life for peoples of ASEAN
• Contribution towards ASEAN integration
 
 
 
The roadshow was attended by representatives from the Government agencies, private sectors and industry players with the main objective to gather feedback on the ICT needs and requirements in order to design activities and policy recommendations toward a conducive environment for ICT businesses/industry which is only made possible and effective through regular consultations dialogue and information sharing.
 
The Honourable Minister of Communications, in his speech highlighted the vibrancy and growth potential of the region which local ICT SMEs should take full advantage of. He also noted Brunei Darussalam’s achievements and key milestones with regards to ICT by citing the most recent achievement specifically in APICTA where Brunei Darussalam has won three awards. He further urged the local ICT companies and innovators to step up and realise their creative ideas into tangible products and services through incentives such as the ASEAN ICT Fund and funds from Dialogue Partners, With the implementation of AIM2015, entrepreneurs from both the public and private sectors are encouraged to explore opportunities in ASEAN for the expansion of their businesses. During this event, the Malay version of the AIM 2015 (Pelan Induk ICT ASEAN 2015) was launched.
 
Brunei Darussalam participations in enhancing development in ICT sector have continued to gain recognition whereby Brunei Darussalam has been identified to lead one of the key activities in AIM 2015, namely the ASEAN ICT Innovation Awards. AITI as the implementing agency is currently working with their ASEAN colleagues in refining the details of the ASEAN ICT Innovation Awards. A total of 5 categories have been proposed; the ICT Awards for Public Sector, Private Sector, Corporate and Social Responsibility, ICT Start-up and Digital Contents. 
 
The launching of the roadshow was followed by presentations on AIM 2015 by the Ministry of Communications and a ‘successful story’ by Dr Saiful Azmi bin Haji Awang Husain, Senior Lecturer from University of Brunei Darussalam, to share his experience in getting funding approval from ASEAN TELSOM committee for ASEAN Environmental Impact Assessment in Brunei, a project submitted by Brunei Darussalam.  He was awarded with a certificate of appreciation by the Honourable Minister of Communications, for his contribution.
 
The event ended with a presentation on AIM 2015 project proposal guidelines by a Senior Official from AiTi and concluded with Question and Answer session.
