BICTA 2014 Gala Night Awards Ceremony

The Brunei Info-Communication Technology Awards (BICTA) Gala Night was held this evening at International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas. Consenting to grace the event as the Guest of Honour was His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office. Also present was High Royal Higness Prince Abdul Malik ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah.
 
Upon the arrival of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince at the International Convention Centre, His Royal Highness was greeted by the Honourable Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Communications, Brunei Darussalam; Mr Zhao Houlin, Deputy Secretary General of International Telecommunication Union (ITU); Mr Toshiyuki Yamada, Secretary General of the Asia Pacific Telecommmunity (APT);  and other  senior officials at the Ministry of Communications.
 
Other attendees at the event included deputy ministers, permanent secretaries, senior officials, Authority members and the organizing committee. The event was also attended by delegates from the Asia Pacific (APT) ICT Ministerial Meeting which is currently hosted by Brunei Darussalam from 10-11 September 2014.

The evening’s itinerary began with the arrival of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince at the international Convention Centre followed by a Photo Session with ministers and heads of delegates attending the Asia Pacific ICT Ministerial Meeting. To start the event, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Communications delivered a Welcoming Address. The evening saw performances by local artistes and performers.
 
The programme of the night also included the report of BICTA 2014 by the Deputy Chief Judge, Dr Yong Chee.
 
His Royal Highness the Crown Prince then consented to present tokens of appreciation to the BICTA 2014 judges and prizes to the winners of the three categories as well as winners of the special awards. Tying for third place in the “School Project” category were Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB and Chung Hua Middle School, KB. Meanwhile, another team from Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB placed second place in this category.
 
 
In the Tertiary School Project Category, Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) took home the third prize.
 
An ITB team, and a team from the Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School, tied for second places for this category.
 
Winning first place in this category was a team from International Studies College.
 
For the ICT Industry category, PHMD Publishing Company and MeSixty Sdn Bhd winning second and third places respectively.
 
Teleconsult Sdn Bhd took home the first place in this category.
 
While the Special Awards namely Islamic ICT Award was won by teams from Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College and ITB.
 
Community Services Award was received by Itsbytes Company for their e-learning project and the Young Developers Award was won by Seria Mulia Sarjana International School.
 
The most prestigious award of the night, the Royal Patron Award, given to the best amongst all first place winners, was won by Teleconsult Sdn Bhd. The Royal Patron Award is only presented once every two years.

The BICTA was first organized in 2004 and is an annual event organized by the Ministry of Communications to stimulate ICT industry innovation and creativity amongst individuals, students and entrepreneurs including SMEs. The theme for BICTA 2014 is “Empowering a Digital Nation”. Recipients of the award are also given further opportunity to participate in the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Award.
 
BICTA is a component of the APICTA Awards whose vision is to widen the influence of the ICT industry in the Asia region. BICTA winners have represented Brunei Darussalam to compete with other participants from Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam in the annual APICTA competition. It is hoped that BICTA will continue to provide the platform for ICT professionals to constantly innovate, resulting in more locally-inspired business solutions, benefitting the community in Brunei Darussalam.
