Brunei Darussalam competitors return with trophies

Brunei Darussalam competitors have made Brunei proud once again by winning 3 Merit Awards at this year’s Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards. The merit winners -  Teleconsult Sdn Bhd for “Teleconsult SkyEye”, Chung Hwa Middle School for “Heritage of South East Asia“ and Institut Teknologi Brunei for “The Sulu Princess” received their awards at the APICTA 2014 Gala Dinner held at the Puri Agung in Hotel Sahid Jakarta on 30th November 2014.  Merit awards are given out for the runners up in each category. 2 Merit Award for each category are determined based on an entry with  the total score which is not less than 95% from the score of the Winner and with a minimum score of 6.650.
 
The winning streak for Brunei Darussalam at APICTA began in 2008 when The Sultanate clinched its first APICTA awards. Mars Enterprise Sdn Bhd won the first Merit Award with the product, Mars Financial Package. In 2009, Mars Enterprise Sdn Bhd won the Merit Award again with the product Brunei e-Custom declaration. In 2010, Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB won a Merit Award in the Secondary Category with the product Spring Grass.
 
In 2011, Brunei Darussalam clinched the first  winner award and two Merit awards. The winner Award was presented to Crescent Sdn Bhd with the product Islamic Business Educators. The two Merit Award was presented to Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB with the product Waseven Resource Reservation and Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College with the product Brunei Experience Multimedia project. In APICTA 2012, Brunei bagged 4 Merit Awards. The awards went to Chung Hwa Middle School with the product Brunei Treasure; Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College with the product Brunei Experience Multimedia Project; John Harith Sdn Bhd with the product Halal Food Traceability; and MeSixty Sdn Bhd with the product Chat Worthy. In APICTA 2013,  The 2 Merit Award winners went to Chung Hwa Middle School, Kuala Belait (KB) with their project Higher Education Guidance System (HEGS) and and Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) with their project AutiSay
 
The Brunei Darussalam delegation headed by Haji Yahkup bin Haji Menudin, Chief Executive of Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) made a triumphant return home yesterday morning. The participants were welcomed by Associate Professor Dr Hjh Zohrah binti Hj Sulaiman, Acting Vice Chancellor of ITB, management of AITI, family and friends of the competitors.

There were a total of 183 entries submitted by 13 participating economies (including Brunei Darussalam) to compete for this year’s awards.  Brunei Darussalam submitted a total of 6 entries in the Schools, Tertiary and ICT industry categories. 
 
Brunei Darussalam’s competitors in this year’s APICTA competition were:
 
1.       Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB with their Android application, Heritage of South East Asia, developed to encourage both locals and foreigners to learn about these wonderful places of cultural or physical significance.
 
2.       Kolej International Graduate Studies (IGS) with the product Virtual Watch Fitting which helps the user to try out watches using augmented reality before making a decision to purchase.
 
3.       Sekolah Vokasional Nakhoda Ragam product is SVNR Staff Network, a platform that allows staff to share the visibility of resources between staff, teachers, each department and school administration.
 
4.       Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) with their Android application The Sulu Princess which enhances story-book reading experiences by implementing Augmented Reality technology to the concept illustrations of the book to create animated visualizations of the story. “The Sulu Princess” derives from the story of Laila Menchanai and Sultan Bolkiah, the fifth sultan of Brunei.
 
5.       Teleconsult Sdn Bhd with the project Teleconsult SkyEye the project develops high definition aerial capture and processing technologies focusing on automation to minimize manual labour input thereby ensuring consistency of quality and lower costs and the end product is high definition videography of mobile cell towers and rooftop sites.
 
6.       PHMD Publishing Company participated with the product Salam Halal. The objective of this project is to propose a solution in the issues of finding credible Halal Food Restaurant.
 
The APICTA competition has provided a valuable opportunity for exposure for Brunei’s ICT companies and schools to compete on an international level.  The Ministry of Communications and AITI hopes competing at APICTA competition has given the Brunei participants a chance to hone their competitive skills and establish networks with counterparts in Asia Pacific.
