Brunei ICT Awards (BICTA) 2014 Workshop – App Inventor
Monday, 5th May 2014 – The Brunei ICT Awards (BICTA) competition for 2014 was launched on 4th March 2014. During the launching of the award, two new special awards were introduced to the competition. One of the latest special awards is called the ‘Young Developers Award’. It is meant to encourage the understanding of the global technology marketplace and the pace at which it moves. Coding today is an essential tool similar to what maths and geography was a generation ago. With this award, to be presented to the most innovative ICT software, hardware or integrated solution developed by a participant under the age of 12, BICTA hopes to generate the interest and support for the younger generations in ICT.
A workshop was conducted to introduce potential participants to ‘App Inventor’ which is a basic software programme which young developers will be able to use as a platform to build their mobile apps. The App Inventor Workshop aims to develop ICT coding competency for those at a tender age which would encourage participation of youth for BICTA and APICTA. This project is similarly carried out in Singapore and Finland. This workshop will provide training and equip a group of young developers with Mobile Applications Developer (MAD) skills. The workshop was conducted for participants below the age of 12 years old. The best young developers from the workshop will be encouraged to compete in BICTA 2014.
The workshop which is being held on 3rd – 4th May and 10th - 11th May, were conducted in two (2) venues, Bag Networks Sdn Bhd and Laksamana College of Business. The workshop was attended a total of 40 students from International School Brunei, Jerudong International School, Stella School Brunei, Chung Hwa Middle School (BSB), Seri Mulia Serjana International School, Bright Jigsaw International School, Saint Andrew's School, Chung Hua Middle School, KB and PGGMB School, Sungai Akar, and the workshop were facilitated by representatives from Institute Technology Brunei, BAG Networks Sdn Bhd and Google Developer Groups (GDG) Brunei Darussalam with the support of AITI.
