Ministry of Communications and AITI host national broadband workshop

The Ministry of Communications (MOC) and the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) hosted a half-day workshop on National Broadband at the Dewan Seri Kerna, AITI building this morning. The workshop was conducted by experts from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the Korea Communication Commission (KCC).
 
Present as the Guest of Honour was Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Communications of Brunei Darussalam. Also present was Yang Mulia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications; Yang Mulia Awang Haji Idris bin Haji Md Ali, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications; Yang Mulia Awang Haji Yahkup bin Haji Menudin, Chief Executive of AITI as well as senior officials from relevant government ministries, TELCOs, ICT industry players and the business sector.
 
The workshop started off with a welcoming address by Yang Mulia Haji Yahkup bin Menudin, Chief Executive of AITI who mentioned how the workshop will give participants a chance to reflect on the country’s broadband deployment and development. Through speakers sharing their views and findings in the workshop, these will help to further propel broadband deployment and related value-added services to support Brunei’s economic growth and bring benefits to society.
 
Mr Shameer Sharma from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) also spoke about the importance of Broadband and ITU initiatives, both regionally and globally.
 
Yang Mulia Hajah Siti Hairmi binti Haji Ibrahim, Acting Senior Special Duties Officer at the Ministry of Communications spoke on the government's initiatives and aspirations for broadband in the country. The presentation, among others, emphasized the role of broadband development in the context of the Ministry of Communications' vision towards a Smart Society by 2017 and its contribution to the realisation of Wawasan 2035.
 
Finally, Mr Matthew O'Rourle shared the findings and deliverables of the field mission with focus on the importance of having an effective broadband policy. The workshop concluded with open discussions facilitated by experts from the ITU and KKC.
 
The workshop was aimed at presenting a holistic and multi-sectoral view on the importance of broadband, as well as the visions and aspirations of relevant stakeholders for the deployment of broadband in Brunei Darussalam. At the same time, the workshop was expected to share information and findings gathered throughout a 3-day field mission, via questionnaires and interviews with selected government ministries and ICT stakeholders.  The field mission work and workshop will be used to produce a revised National Broadband Blueprint which the Ministry of Communications first prepared in 2008.  The revised National Broadband Blueprint will outline further approaches and national broadband strategies that will help Brunei Darussalam fulfil Wawasan 2035.
