More innovation urged to generate a Smart Nation
The Brunei ICT Awards (BICTA) 2015 was officially launched today at the Seri Kerna Hall, AITI. Present as the Guest of Honour to grace the launch was Yang Mulia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communications and Chairman of AITI. The ceremony was also attended by the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications Yang Mulia, Awang Mohd. Riza bin Dato Paduka Haji Mohd. Yunos; the Deputy Permanent Secretaries, the Authority Members, senior officials from government, private and academic sectors, as well as representatives of businesses from the ICT industry.
On hand to welcome the Guest of Honour was Yang Mulia Awang Haji Jailani bin Haji Buntar, the Acting Chief Executive of AITI and Chairman of BICTA 2015 Working Committee.
The Guest of Honour then proceeded to launch the event using a smart watch to activate the  BICTA 2015 video that highlights BICTA activities, timeline, prizes and past winners’ experiences. There was also a sharing of experiences session by two (2) BICTA 2014 winners who have journeyed through to win merit awards in APICTA 2014. Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB spoke about their winning product “Heritage of South East Asia” and Institut Teknologi Brunei shared their experience of bringing “The Sulu Princess” to APICTA 2014.

The event concluded with a presentation of tokens of appreciation to the five (5) former BICTA Working Committee members who have made significant contributions to the development of BICTA in the past decade.

BICTA is an annual event led by the Ministry of Communications and jointly organised by AITI and InfoCom Federation Brunei (IFB). For the 12th year running, the competition aims to stimulate innovation and creativity in the ICT industry amongst individuals, organisations and SMEs.
There are three (3) categories in the BICTA competition:
1.       School Project – open to individuals or groups in both primary and secondary school students ICT projects.
2.       Tertiary Project – open to individuals or groups of tertiary students ICT projects.
3.       ICT Industry – open to individuals or groups, or locally registered ICT businesses.
Each winner for the above categories will receive cash prizes of BND2,500, BND5,000 and BND10,000 respectively. There will also be four (4) Special Awards this year, these are, Promising Entrepreneur, Young Developer, Green ICT, and Emerging Technology.
BICTA is the local component of an international competition, the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards where the quality and categories provided are in-line with APICTA standards. The objective of the competition is to increase ICT awareness in the community and assist to bridge the digital divide. It also provides networking and product benchmarking opportunities to ICT innovators and entrepreneurs in the Asia Pacific region.
Brunei Darussalam’s participation in APICTA since 2008 has managed to win two (2) awards and fourteen (14) merit awards to date.
A series of BICTA 2015 activities including roadshows and workshops will be held from March onwards. The timeline is as follows:

All schools including primary, secondary and tertiary levels, as well as local individuals and ICT companies having their own ICT products and services are encouraged to participate.
