Telecommunications and ICTs - Drivers of innovation

The Ministry of Communications and the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) celebrated the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) 2015 at Seri Kerna Hall, AITI Building with a Forum centered around the WTISD 2015 theme.
 
WTISD is an annual celebration by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), to help raise awareness about the benefits that the Internet and information and communication technologies (ICT), can bring to societies and economies. The theme of this year’s WTISD is “Telecommunications and ICTs: Drivers of innovation” which acknowledges the contribution of ICT innovation to socio-economic development and fulfilment of the ITU’s commitment to connect the world. 
 
WTISD 2015 on 17 May 2015 also marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).   WTISD 2015 is another milestone in the history of the ITU as it is the ITU’s 150th anniversary.
 
The Guest of Honour at the Forum was Yang Berhormat, Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, the Minister of Communications.  Also in attendance was Yang Mulia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Communications and Chairman of AITI. About 150 guests comprising of Members of Authority, senior government officials, ICT industry players and the media attended the event.
 
The event kicked off with welcome remarks by Yang Mulia Pengiran Hj Mohd Zain bin Pengiran Hj Abdul Razak, Chief Executive of AITI.  This was followed by the Minister of Communications who delivered his speech for the forum.  In his speech, Yang Berhormat, Pehin emphasized upon the importance of innovation to support Wawasan 2035 and the need to improve our national innovation ecosystem.

The Minister of Communications then proceeded to launch the Brunei Darussalam Radio Spectrum Plan which contains information about spectrum planning and allocation, including the radiofrequency band plans.

The Forum continued with presentations from international speakers centered on industry innovation:
 
1.       Mr. Johan Adler , Vice President, Government & Industry Relations, Ericsson – “Transforming to a Networked Society”.

2.       Mr. Shankar Sivaprakasam, Vice President, Global Premier Accounts, APAC and Japan, OpenText- “Cloud Computing and Its Current Trends and Challenges”.

In the afternoon, a panel discussion on “Facilitating the ICT Industry – Driver for Innovation” was moderated by Haji Jailani Bin Haji Buntar, Deputy Chief Executive of AITI. The panel included Muhd Ruslan Hj Mahadi from the E-Government National Centre, Daniel Leong Nyuk Ming from the Brunei Economic Development Board, Muhammad Reeda Haji Malik from Telekom Brunei Berhad, Christopher Phan from DST Communications Sdn Bhd and Hadi Othman, from Tru Synergy discussed on “Building an Innovation Ecosystem”.
