Compound Fine for Use of Walkie-Talkie Without License

The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) has issued one (1) compound fine to a local business entity in Berakas amounting to Brunei Dollars Seven Hundred Only [BND700.00] for operating several multi-frequency band walkie-talkies without a valid Operating Licence (OL). A warning notice was also issued for infringing Section 9 of the Telecommunications Order 2001, where the multi-frequency band walkie-talkies being used are not type-approved to be operated within Brunei Darussalam.  

Such offences are punishable under Section 35(1) of the Telecommunications Order, 2001, and any person found guilty of such infringements can be issued a compound fine of up to BND1,000.00 for each offence.  

AITI would like to remind the public that unlicensed systems or services may cause interference to critical infrastructure and essential services, which may disrupt the day-to-day operations of government agencies, local service providers, educational institutions and businesses that rely on telecommunications. The public is advised to obtain AITI’s approval prior to installing any telecommunications system, providing any telecommunications service or operating any telecommunications or radio-communications equipment.  

Businesses and individuals are required to obtain the relevant licences for the establishment, installation, maintenance, provision or operation of any telecommunications or radio-communications system or service through AITI’s Online Services portal at https://online.aiti.gov.bn. Members of the public can also assist AITI in its efforts to curb any unlicensed activity by sending an email to info@aiti.gov.bn.
