The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) has issued two (2) compound fines to the owner of a business amounting to Brunei Dollars One Thousand and Four Hundred Only [BND1,400.00] for operating a telecommunications service without a valid Service Provider for the Telecommunication Industry (SeTi) Licence and for letting for hire walkie-talkies without a valid Dealer Telecommunication Licence (DTL).

Such offences are punishable under sections 33(1) and 34(2) of the Telecommunication Order, 2001, and any person found guilty of such infringements can be issued a compound fine of up to BND1,000.00 for each offence. If convicted, the penalty for an offence under section 33(1) is a fine up to B$100,000.00, imprisonment for a term not exceeding three (3) years, or both, and the penalty for an offence under section 34(2) is a fine up to B$10,000.00, imprisonment up to three (3) years, or both.

AITI would like to remind the public that unlicensed systems or services may cause interference to critical infrastructure and essential services, which may disrupt day-to-day operations of Government agencies, local service providers, educational institutions and businesses that rely on telecommunications. The public is advised to obtain AITI’s approval prior to installing any telecommunications system, providing any telecommunications service or operating any telecommunications or radio-communications equipment.

Businesses and the general public are encouraged to obtain the relevant licences for the establishment, installation, maintenance, provision or operation of any telecommunications or radio-communications system or service through AITI’s Online Services portal at https://online.aiti.gov.bn. Members of the public can also assist AITI in its efforts to curb any unlicensed activity by sending an e-mail to info@aiti.gov.bn.
