Bridging the Digital Gap in Brunei Darussalam

Wednesday, May 8, 2024

Today marked another successful community outreach programme under the Digital Brunei initiative aimed at fostering digital literacy and awareness among Brunei Darussalam’s elderly population. The event was held at Pusat Kegiatan Warga Emas (PKWE) in Tutong District.

More than 30 senior citizens attended the event, which was a collaborative effort between Digital Brunei and PKWE Tutong. The objective was to educate Bruneians about the practical aspects of digitalisation in their daily lives and to raise awareness about cyber security, especially among the senior citizen community.

The half-day programme began with welcoming remarks from the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI), followed by a certificate presentation to the speakers and the Centre. Sessions from the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) and Cyber Security Brunei (CSB) addressed various topics including online identity protection; identifying fraudulent websites and online frauds. Datastream Digital Sdn Bhd (DST) presented on how to use digital tools effectively. Meanwhile BIBD and EVYD Sdn Bhd had the opportunity to share and showcase the convenient use of their digital payments and health applications, illustrating the functionality of these tools to assist the senior community and ensure they are not left behind in this age of rapid technological advancement.

It is hoped that the informative sessions provided valuable insights and useful advice for the participants to navigate the digital landscape with the emphasis on the significance of safety in an era of digital transformation. More community outreach programmes will be organised in the future, in collaboration with Pusat Kegiatan Warga Emas (PKWE) in all four districts to continue the journey towards bridging the digital divide, which will result in digital inclusion nationwide.

Digital Brunei is an initiative by the Digital Economy Council, which is facilitated by AITI with the aim to empower the community through digital technology in an effort to create a more digitally inclusive society. This initiative is also intended to establish Brunei Darussalam as a nation that fosters innovation and digital technology by raising awareness of national digitalisation initiatives. Digital Brunei is committed to aligning its objectives in achieving the goals of Wawasan Brunei 2035 and support the Digital Economy Masterplan 2025.
